Gary L. Garlic AKA JuJu Drum is a professional musician, private instructor, music educator, author, band director, music director, clinician, adjudicator, teaching artist, and entrepreneur. Born in Washington, DC, JuJu relocated to Norfolk, VA in 1988 to study music education at Norfolk State University as a percussionist.
Since the 1990’s JuJu has worked with many companies as a percussionist, such as: Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Company, and the famous Dance Theatre of Harlem. He has worked as a bass player, drummer, sound engineer, and bandleader for Busch Gardens Entertainment. Most recently JuJu has been a featured artist on Steel Drums during the Busch Gardens Food and Wine Festival.
JuJu has performed with many major acts throughout his career, including Stevie Wonder, Albertina Walker, Donna Summer, Chris Vadala (Chuck Mangione), and as an opening act for Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Currently, JuJu is Director of Bands at Young Musicians of Virginia, a teaching artist for Young Audiences of Virginia, and a private instructor for drums, electric bass, keyboard, percussion, and digital music production. He still lives in Norfolk with his lovely wife, Corey. They have two children, Kyra and Gary Jr., and two grandchildren, Aaliyah (8 years old) and Sanaa (3 months old).
